How to delete hiberfil.sys and save a bunch of disk space

So you build your nice Server 2008 server and allocate a system drive with enough space to install the OS and the applications that you want to install. On the root of the system drive windows has placed hiberfil.sys (the file used to store memory when you hibernate your PC) why would I want to hibernate my server you say? well you wouldn’t, so lets delete it! and save a bunch of space.

Is really easy to get rid of this file. There really is no need for this to be hanging around on a server as you are very unlikely to want to hibernate the server.

Hiberfil.sys has been left around from the Vista or Windows 7 version of windows and MS decided to leave it there! This procedure works on Windows 7 or Vista as well so if you don’t want to hibernate your PC you can recall the disk space back.

Note that if you have a bunch of RAM in your server maybe 12gig or more – this file is going to be massive! so follow these instructions to delete hiberfil.sys

open a command prompt and type

powercfg –h off

that’s it!

Check your system drive and relish the disk space back!
